Flørli 4444
Tour description
Flørli is a village with a rich and fascinating history. Its story began in the early 1900s when hydroelectric power plants were established in the region. These plants required access to the rugged terrain, leading to the construction of an extraordinary feat of engineering—the Flørli 4444 steps.
Consisting of 4,444 wooden steps, the staircase stretches steeply up the mountainside. The steps were built to provide a means for workers to reach water pipelines situated high above the fjord. These pipelines were part of the infrastructure used to transport water from higher elevations down to the plant to generate electricity. The steps allowed workers to maintain and inspect the pipelines as necessary, ensuring the efficient operation of the hydropower generation process.
Over the years, the hydroelectric plant and industry in Flørli diminished, the facilities were either demolished or turned into museums. The village has today transitioned into a tranquil retreat, nestled amidst the breathtaking beauty of the fjord. Our RIB tour invites you to take a walk through history and hike these iconic steps for yourself. It’s a whole-day trip where we ferry you both to-and-fro the village in our nimble RIB boats, which stay parked during the trek. It might prove a challenge, but we promise you that the view from the top will be more than worth your while. Just to give you some perspective, making it to the top is like climbing the Empire State Building almost twice or the Eiffel Tower more than two and a half times. Your captain will be alongside you for the hike, giving you moral support and showing you the way.
For those uncertain about being able to make it to the top, you can also make a shorter climb of about 1000 steps, which will take you to an almost equally stunning vantage point. There’s also more to do at Flørli, including visiting their cafe and their Hydropower factory which has been turned into a museum.
Flørli is situated deeper in the fjord than our regular Lysefjord Sightseeing route goes, meaning we’ll also show you the major attractions of that tour during the transport. You’ll get to see Pulpit Rock, Vagabond Cave, and Whisky Falls, all the while being on the lookout for the bustling wildlife that inhabits the region. It’s a 7-hour trip all in all, with a little over 4 hours spent at Flørli and the rest divided between the RIB tour each way to and fro Stavanger.
